Servset- What is it?
Servset is a program that sets the time on a Novell server to that of the
PC from which it is invoked. It will work with all versions of Novell upto
and including 4.01. Servset is invoked from an individual PC at the DOS
command line (no Console screen is needed). The program has options to check
for backjumps (ie the server time leaping backwards) and an invisible option
which produces no output (useful for including Servset as a subprogram).
Servset will set the time of the Server which is your current default
connection.
How do you invoke Servset?
To invoke Servset you simply enter Servset at the command line (or you can
invoke from Windows as a PIF file). Prior to calling Servset you must have
NETx or VLM's loaded and be logged onto your Server with Console privelege.
The command line and options are:
Servset / i - invisible
b - backjump check
/i Invisible causes program to produce no output, however DOSerrorlevels are
still produced(see below). The invisible option is useful if you to include
Servset as a subprogram.
/b Backjump Check - Checks that the time change won't cause the server time
to jump backwards. If it would you press space bar to press ahead any other
key to abandon. This option is present as some software objects to time
going backwards (eg database records being closed before they're opened)
Please note that Servset operates using low level calls to Netware, however
It is not possible to turn off logging to the console and file
SYSTEM\SYS$LOG.ERR
Included with in Servset is a program Extime which examines log file and
outputs all time changes performed on the server. In order to cut down on
console messages if Servset finds the PC and Server are already synchronised
it will not perform a time change.
Obviously it is best if the calling PC has it's clock accurately set to
achieve this you should call a Time service such as NIST using Timeset
by Life Sciences(Tel 206 387 9788) and Rightime by Air System Technologies
(Tel 214 402 9660).
